Hannah Brown—Landscapes
London-based fine artist Hannah Brown, whose work is currently showing as part of Whitechapel Gallery’s London Open (an open call group exhibition featuring the work of artists who must be resident in London and over 26), is deeply immured in landscapes. And yet, these landscapes blur at the edges of the unreal. Grassy trails lead into soft, dark tree-lines; a level of apprehension, of chthonic possibility, fills her worlds. A buzz, or hum, just at the edge of hearing. We are waiting; but for what?
Brown’s titles are allusive, playful and elliptic. From Hedge 3 to The Field Next to Tesco that is Soon to be Built On. If the fine artist’s creations evoke the mannerism of 19th century oil painting, they are also a product of now, and of unearthing and reimagining those traditions; such landscapes almost cannot exist, or did once exist, or belong only to the category of mirage and myth. You can see Hannah’s work, alongside that of a host of other trend-setting creators, until August 26.
